Whites crash in basement battle

The home side went into the lead after just 13 minutes when Jones' pass found Kieran Richardson and the former Manchester United winger made no mistake with a fine finish.

The lead was doubled when Jones powered home Richardson's corner, before El-Hadji Diouf reduced the deficit with a free-kick.

Diouf fired wide after Nicolas Anelka's flick in the second-half, before Sunderland sealed victory when substitute Daryl Murphy slotted home in the 90th minute.

Wanderers had plenty of possession, but struggled to create many chances and will hope to bounce back to form when Derby visit the Reebok on Wednesday.

Momentum had started to build before the opening bell following better ...

The world's largest retailer reported its net income rose 4 percent to $4.1 billion, or $1.02 a share, in the fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31. Excluding charges for dropped real-estate projects and restructuring, the world's largest retailer earned $1.04 a share, beating analysts' expectations by two cents a share. Revenue increased 8.3 percent to $106.27 billion.

"The death of the consumer has been greatly exaggerated," Jack Bouroudjian, a principal at Brewer Investment Group, told "Squawk Box" after Wal-Mart's report. Still, Wal-Mart warned that consumers are becoming more cautious and said its earnings in the current quarter would fall short of estimates.

Mkt Watch : Investors’ playground, traders’ graveyard

The market is displaying all the classic signs of a post sell-off syndrome. A v-shaped relief rally, spikes in volatility, retest of lower levels, low trading volumes and aversion to mid- and small-caps. This is exactly what you would have expected to see. These patterns call for a different tactical approach on part of investors.

In a market that has clearly not stabilised yet, traders should either refrain from trading or cut down their trade sizes drastically. Equally, if they have to trade they should be extremely nimble and book small gains whenever they get them. This is not the time to be greedy. Compulsive traders should avoid positional trades and trade with narrow stop losses so that they can minimise losses if the market turns against them, which is quite likely. This market could indeed be a trader's graveyard with the Nifty gyrating wildly between a big band of, say, 4,500-5,400.

Oil slips as Opec gathers in Saudi Arabia

Commodities came under pressure on Monday as a wave of risk aversion swept across markets, dragging energy, metals and agricultural prices lower.

Oil fell sharply at the start of a crucial week with crude prices in sight of the key $100 level as delegates began to gather for a historic meeting of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.
